Discovering Omega Eco Jungle Lodge

Our stay at Omega Eco Jungle Lodge in Pico Bonito was one of the most special experiences we’ve had in Honduras. Waking up to the sounds of the jungle, spotting toucans and hummingbirds right outside our room, and having the river nearby made it feel completely different from any regular hotel. This is a place to slow down, disconnect, and really enjoy nature, and it’s perfect if you’re looking for a true jungle experience.

Location & Surroundings

Getting to the Omega Eco Jungle Lodge is easier than you might think. The lodge is only about 30 minutes from La Ceiba, which even has a small airport. We used the transfer service offered by the lodge and it was just a normal taxi, so there is no need for a 4WD.

Even though it is only 30 minutes away, you feel completely remote and cut off. There are no neighbors, no road noise, and you are right in the middle of nature, making it perfect to fully relax and leave everyday life behind.

Accommodation & Room Types at Omega Eco Jungle Lodge

Omega Eco Jungle Lodge Pico Bonito offers eight different room types designed for one to four guests. If you are traveling alone, you pay less. Breakfast is included for every room and served a la carte. We stayed in the Cafe Room, which has two double beds, a private bathroom, and a ceiling fan that was sufficient since it got cooler at night. Waking up and stepping into the hammock right outside our room was a highlight. The room is on the ground floor, so you look into the jungle rather than above it.

There is no single best room at Omega Eco Jungle Lodge, as it really depends on what you expect from your stay. Some rooms are cozy and perfect for couples, while others offer more space and extra amenities for those who prefer to cook or spend more time indoors. Every option provides a unique way to enjoy this jungle lodge accommodation in Honduras. You can check out the lodge’s website to see all the rooms and what each offers, so you can find the one that suits you best.

Our Experience at Omega Tours Eco Jungle Lodge

Now we want to share what it was really like staying at Omega Tours Eco Jungle Lodge. We should mention that our experience started a bit rocky. The taxi arranged by the lodge was not only late but also in poor condition. The beginning was far from perfect, but thankfully everything quickly improved once we arrived at the lodge.

Check-In & Atmosphere

The moment we stepped into Omega Tours Eco Jungle Lodge, we knew visiting Pico Bonito was the right decision. Everything was quiet, the fresh smell of rain filled the air, and at check-in, we were warmly welcomed by Jose, who we would see many times over the next few days.

To our delight, a hummingbird was drinking right behind us. We had not expected to see hummingbirds, which made the moment even more special. After settling our bags in the room, Jose gave us a tour of the lodge grounds, showing us the start of their private hiking trails, the dining area, and the free drinking water station. It was the perfect introduction to our stay at this eco lodge in Honduras.

Service & Staff

Omega Tours Eco Jungle Lodge is run by its German owner Udo, a former member of the German National Kayaking and Rafting Team, who started Omega Tours back in 1992. Unfortunately, he and his wife were in Europe during our stay, so we did not get to meet them in person. Before our arrival, we were mostly in contact with Daniel, responsible for the tours and usually also takes care of the check-in. He was always friendly and did everything possible to make our stay unforgettable.

If you’re visiting the famous Maya ruins before or after Pico Bonito, don’t miss our detailed Copan Travel Guide with transport tips, entrance fees, and what to expect.

We actually spent even more time with the super kind Jose than with Daniel. Every evening during happy hour, we sat down at the bar and had long conversations with him about our one day in San Salvador, the current situation in Honduras, and everyday life at the lodge.

On this trip, we also made a quick stop in El Salvador. If you’re curious, our One Day in San Salvador guide shares everything we did and what we recommend.

Jose was always in a good mood and had an interesting taste in music. He could not quite understand why I (Malte) kept ordering the same dish every night, but honestly, when the food is that good, what can you do? Both spoke very good English, and the staff serving breakfast were also extremely friendly.

Food & Dining Experience at Omega Eco Jungle Lodge

The food and drinks are served at the Restaurant and Bar La Jungla, the heart of the lodge. Dining at Omega Eco Jungle Lodge is varied and inspired by German cuisine, but you will also find several local dishes on the menu. We did not have a single meal that we didn’t enjoy, as everything was freshly prepared and full of flavor.

Breakfast

Breakfast is available from 8 to 11 in the morning. The breakfast was really delicious, and every morning we had a great selection of fresh dishes. The woman who took our orders was always very friendly and made the start of our day even nicer. Everything was prepared fresh and tasted great every time.

In the afternoon, you can enjoy happy hour from 4 pm to 5 pm, when local beers and shots are offered at half price, meaning a beer costs just about 1.15 USD.

Lunch / Dinner

Dinner is avaialable until 7 pm. Dinner was also really good. There were German dishes like Rouladen, but also local Honduran meals, all super tasty. There was a big selection of dressings for the salad, plus spicy sauces, so nothing was missing. The dishes from the photos cost the following: the salad with chicken was 15.00 USD, the chicken dish was 13.50 USD, and the shrimp dish was 19.00 USD.

Just keep in mind that this is the only place to eat in the area, so you depend on the restaurant for all your meals.

Sustainability And Eco Practices

Even though we are not the most sustainable travelers ourselves, our stay at Omega Jungle Lodge showed us how much impact a responsible concept can have. As one of the first eco lodges in Honduras, it truly impressed us with its focus on nature, peaceful surroundings, and sustainable practices.

• One of the first eco lodges in Honduras
• Strong focus on nature and sustainability
• Open layout allows fresh air to flow through, no air conditioning needed
• Built with recycled and local materials
• Solar-powered hot water
• Sustainable water treatment and recycling
• Freshwater pool that is perfect for relaxing

Best Activities Near Omega Lodge

We will publish a detailed article soon about all the activities you can do around Omega Lodge, but here is already a quick overview. The lodge has its own hiking trails, and a public one leads to a huge waterfall. You can go rafting, spot wildlife, or simply walk around and enjoy the nature surrounding the lodge.

  • Several private hiking trails starting directly at the lodge
  • A beautiful trail leading to a large waterfall
  • Rafting opportunities on the Cangrejal River
  • Plenty of chances to spot wildlife like birds and lizards
  • Peaceful paths for walking around and enjoying nature

Areas for Improvement / What Could Be Better

There were a few things we thought could be improved during our stay at Omega Eco Jungle Lodge. First, the taxi service to and from the lodge was in very poor condition. We initially thought it was just bad luck, but on the return trip, it was the same taxi, so it seems like this driver is tied to the lodge contract.

Second, the lodge is designed so that guests spend most of their time outside rather than in their rooms, which makes sense economically, but we did wish for a few extra conveniences. For example, a small fridge in the room would have been nice. The door to the terrace needs to be kept closed because of ants, but it did not stay shut properly, so we had to place a stool in front of it, which made it impossible to sit there comfortably. A second seating option or a properly functioning door would solve this.

We also noticed there is no Wi-Fi in the rooms. We understand the intention, but it could be helpful if Wi-Fi were available at least in the mornings or evenings, for example to watch a movie after the bar closes.
Overall, these were minor issues and they should not stop you from staying at Omega Eco Jungle Lodge. We just want to be open and honest, and we also mentioned these points at check-out.

Verdict – Is Omega Eco Jungle Lodge Worth It?

Let’s wrap up our Omega Eco Jungle Lodge review. Yes, it is not the cheapest option in Pico Bonito. We paid 285.00 USD for three nights, but in our opinion, it was worth every dollar. The staff is incredibly friendly, the lodge is surrounded by greenery and wildlife, there are plenty of fun activities, and the food was absolutely amazing. It felt like a truly authentic experience, and in our opinion, it is one of the best places to stay in Pico Bonito if you want a real jungle lodge experience.
