Many travelers start their Honduras trip by flying into San Pedro Sula or Roatán, but we chose the overland route from El Salvador. In this 2-week Honduras itinerary and travel guide, you will experience a perfect mix of culture, jungle adventures, and Caribbean island life, plus practical travel tips, transportation advice, and insider knowledge to make your trip smooth and unforgettable.

Our 2-Week Honduras Itinerary – From Mayan Ruins to Island Paradise

Before we traveled to Honduras, we weren’t sure what to expect. Many travelers skip the country or only visit the Bay Islands, but we’re so happy we decided to explore more. During our two weeks, we felt completely safe, met incredibly kind people, and experienced some of the most diverse scenery we’ve ever seen.
If you’re looking for an adventure that mixes culture, nature, and Caribbean vibes, this 2-week Honduras itinerary will show you how to explore the best of the country step by step.

Day 1–2: From Guatemala or San Salvador to Copán – Discover the Maya Ruins

We started our Honduras adventure by crossing the border from El Salvador, but this route also works perfectly if you are coming from Guatemala. If you are wondering how to travel from San Salvador to Copán, we took a shared shuttle with Gekko Explorer. At 65.00 USD, it isn’t the cheapest option, but it allowed us to reach Copán in time to explore the ruins in the afternoon.
Copán is one of the easiest and safest entry points to Honduras and a great first stop to slow down, explore history, and enjoy Honduras.

Activities:

  • Visit the Copán Ruins and learn about the fascinating Maya civilization.
  • Explore Copán Ruinas town, enjoy fresh coffee, and relax in small local restaurants.

Travel tip: The shuttle from Antigua to Copán costs 45.00 USD and is also operated by Gekko Explorer. If you are flying into San Pedro Sula, you can start your route there instead. For our itinerary, you have to return the same way you came.

Note: Over the next few weeks we will publish our full Copán guide, including detailed tips on accommodation, restaurants, transportation, and everything you need to plan your visit.

Day 2–5: From Copán to La Ceiba – Jungle Adventure in Pico Bonito National Park

The journey from Copán to La Ceiba is a long travel day, about 8 to 9 hours by bus. When we visited, no shared shuttles were available from Copán to La Ceiba, so we took public buses with a stop in San Pedro Sula. First, we took Casasola bus (departure point) to San Pedro Sula for 6.00 USD, then continued on Cristina Bus for 7.00 USD. We bought both tickets on the day of departure. A budget tip is to avoid buying these tickets online. Many “shared shuttles” charge more than double the price but often just put you on the same buses anyway.

Highlights:

  • The beautiful Pico Bonito National Park is just 40 minutes away from the ferry terminal to Utila, making it easy to combine your jungle experience with the Caribbean islands.
  • Spot wildlife including hummingbirds, toucans, lizards, and more.
  • Raft on the Cangrejal River for an adrenaline-filled experience.

Travel tip: Stay at Omega Jungle Lodge inside Pico Bonito National Park for an authentic jungle experience.

Day 5–8: From La Ceiba to Utila – Beaches, Snorkeling, and Island Vibes

Take a morning or afternoon ferry from La Ceiba to Utila (24.00 USD), the smaller and more relaxed Bay Island in Honduras. This island is perfect for diving and snorkeling, with some of the world’s best-value dive schools. We loved the laid-back Caribbean vibes, beach bars, and street food.

Activities:

  • Snorkel or dive among coral reefs and marine life.
  • Relax on quiet beaches and enjoy local cafés and beach bars.
  • Explore Utila by renting a golf cart

Travel tip: Book ferry tickets in advance and plan to stay at least two nights to fully enjoy the island.

Coming soon: In our detailed Utila blog post we will share where to stay, what to do, how to get around, and our top food recommendations for Utila.

Day 8 to 12: Roatán – Continue your Caribbean Adventure from Utila

After enjoying the relaxed pace of Utila, take a one-hour ferry from Utila to Roatán (24.00 USD), the larger sister island in Honduras. Compared to Utila, Roatán is more touristic and more expensive, but it also has a wider range of restaurants, activities, and accommodations. It’s a great next stop on your two-week Honduras itinerary, offering plenty of opportunities for adventure, relaxation, and island experiences.

Highlights:

  • White sand beaches and calm turquoise waters perfect for swimming and sunbathing
  • Coral reefs and snorkeling tours for seeing colorful fishes
  • Sunset cruises offering amazing Caribbean views

Travel tip: Don’t miss the water taxi between West End and West Bay, a perfect ride that provides unforgettable views of Roatán’s coastline and sunset.

Coming soon: In our full Roatán travel guide, we will share detailed activities, accommodation, and food recommendations to help you plan the perfect island stay.

Day 12–13: Flight to Tegucigalpa and Return

The ferry from Roatán back to La Ceiba costs around 35.00 USD. Instead of taking the ferry, we chose a domestic flight (75.00 USD) to Honduras’ capital, Tegucigalpa (which we actually had to pay twice because we booked it for the wrong day — travel happens!). From there, we continued our journey with a Pullman bus back to San Salvador, but there are also comfortable bus connections to Guatemala if you plan to continue north or to Nicaragua if you’re heading south.

Activities:
• Explore Tegucigalpa for a day if your schedule allows
• Optional overnight stay before traveling back to El Salvador or Guatemala / Nicaragua…

Travel tip: If you prefer to skip overland travel, you can also fly directly from Roatán to international destinations like the USA or Belize.
