OUR TOUR - 7 LAGOONS OF AUSANGATE

Pick-up and arrival in Pacchanta

We were picked up early in the morning from our accommodation at 5 AM. Traveling in a mini-van, we spent approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes on a developed road through Peru’s mountain landscape. The last 20 minutes were on a gravel road before we arrived at our destination – the village of Pacchanta.

There, we fueled up with a breakfast of fruit, fried eggs, cheese, bread rolls, jam, and butter, which provided enough energy. We also picked up hiking sticks free of charge before starting on the 12 km circuit. There was a noticeable sense of anticipation and excitement in the air. Around 9 am, we began the hike together with Vicky’s friend Lisa, who also happens to have a travel blog. We’ll link it for you below.

The hike to the first Lagoon

And so it began. Our first longer hike. It was striking how differently the other participants were dressed, from sneakers to fully equipped hikers. We felt fairly prepared, but we hadn’t bought our rain jackets yet. As luck would have it, it started to rain.

The tour started at 4,200 meters, around 6 degrees Celsius. We also hadn’t bought gloves yet. Under less than optimal conditions, we started the hike and quickly passed an older person . Soon she realized that she wouldn’t make it and turned back. We maintained a comfortable pace and reached the first lagoon in just under 1.5 hours. The trail was rocky but well-maintained, gaining almost 350 meters in altitude.

1. Lagoon - Anqas Qocha

The Anqas Qocha lagoon sits at 4,550 meters and is even more stunning in slightly better weather. Nonetheless, it offered an impressive view and, alongside Lagoon Oqe Qocha, it was our highlight of the tour!

Landscape along the trail

The hike from the first to the second lagoon was considerably shorter yet equally beautiful. The group stayed together, engaging in interesting conversations. Hiking is certainly made easier by these stunning views.

2. Lagoon - China Uturunku Qocha

The China Uturunku Qocha lagoon, as our guide told us, is famous for its shocking story involving the discovery of llama fetuses remarkably preserved in its cool, crystal-clear highland waters. This unique unique color has piqued the interest of scientists and researchers, who are studying the conditions and origins behind this extraordinary find. The fetuses are offerings to Pachamama, “Mother Earth,” in whom the locals believe.

At the second lagoon, one of the other participants asks how many more lagoons are left. Quite amusing, considering they booked the cusco hiking tour “7 Lagoons of Ausangate”.

3. Lagoon - Orco Otorongo

The third lagoon was somewhat less spectacular compared to the first two, although the surrounding scenery looked really nice. Nonetheless, we took some photos to capture the beauty of Laguna Orco Otorongo.

Animals along the trail

The trail not only offers stunning scenery but also provides opportunities to see many wild animals during the hike. Here, you’ll have the chance to see alpacas once more, and honestly, it never gets boring for us. Alongside alpacas, we spotted interesting birds.

4. Lagoon - Oqe Qocha

The fourth lagoon, ‘Oqe Qocha,’ was personally very impressive for us, with the mountain in the background looking mystical. There was also a fantastic photo spot that cost 1.20 USD per person. The attendant emphasized pre-payment, perhaps concerned we might sprint the 6 kilometers back.

5,6,7. Lagoons -Hatun Puka Qocha, Patacocha, Pucacocha

The last three lagoons were unfortunately very unspectacular and close together. Even the walk to the fourth was no more than 5 minutes. Here was the first opportunity to buy water and sweets. There were also toilets available. From here, it was a direct return journey of about 90 minutes.

The hike back to the lunch

Honestly, it feels a bit depressing when the tour highlights are checked off, and then you have to hike back for nearly 90 minutes. Nonetheless, there were still beautiful views on the way back, and we looked forward to the included lunch. The last 40 minutes, you walk back the way you came.

The lunch was okay, much like breakfast, with a wider selection including trucha fish, chicken wings, spaghetti, rice, lentils, plantains, and more. During the meal, we were reminded again of how challenging the altitude and exertion can be for some. Some participants experienced issues and were provided with oxygen bottles due to weakened circulation. We strongly urge everyone to prepare well and acclimatize before going on this Cusco hiking tour to the 7 Lagoons of Ausangate!

WHERE TO BOOK / CONCLUSION

There are typically two ways to book a tour in South America or anywhere else in the world – online or in person. In this case, Lisa booked the tour for us in the city center with “Winay Peru Adventure.” You can easily contact them on facebook or in the city center.

In the end, it was a very long and exhausting tour. We were picked up at 5 AM and returned to Cusco by 6:30 PM. However, it was definitely worthwhile, especially as preparation for the Salkantay trek, a 4-day hike to Machu Picchu. There are a few things to consider, though, and booking the tour should not be done lightly.

TIPS FOR FINISHING SUCCESFULL

We want to be honest with you right from the start. If you cannot walk 10,000 steps a day or are not physically fit, you may unfortunately not be able to complete this tour. Therefore, if you plan to take this tour, we recommend jogging beforehand and preparing your body for the hike. Equally important is acclimatization. Before starting this Cusco hiking tour, you should spend at least two full days in Cusco. Otherwise, you may quickly get altitude sickness and require oxygen. Now, we’d like to inform you about what you should definitely bring along.

The dry season is from March to August, with the best weather from June to August (also the coldest months). However, this period is the high season, resulting in increased tourism. Fortunately, this cusco hiking tour sees fewer visitors compared to other popular hikes, ensuring an experience without issues of over-tourism.

Toilets are available at the starting point where breakfast is served, but it’s crucial to bring your own toilet paper. Not all toilets have flushing systems, so the toilets are not in the best conditions. Another option for restroom facilities is available at the last lagoon.

The same applies here as with the toilets. You can buy water at the beginning and before starting the return journey.

Regular short stops are made, and the guide provides information about the lagoons. However, it’s important to note that not everyone will be carried to the end—you must make it on your own!
